New Zealand North Island Loop

Route Overview

A circuit beginning and ending in Auckland that covers the North Island's volcanic heart, Maori culture, geothermal wonders, and coastal beauty. The loop typically runs south through the Coromandel Peninsula, east through Rotorua's geysers, past the volcanic plateau of Tongariro, down to Wellington, then back up the west coast through Raglan. Roughly 1,500-2,000 km depending on detours.

Suggested duration: 10-21 days

Best Direction

Clockwise (Auckland → Coromandel → Rotorua → Taupo → Tongariro → Wellington → Raglan → Auckland) is the most popular flow. You build from beaches to volcanoes to the capital, and the west coast drive back north through Raglan is a satisfying finish with fewer crowds.

Best Time of Year

  • December to March (NZ summer) for the best weather, warmest swimming, and longest daylight

  • October-November (spring) is also good with fewer tourists and warming temperatures
  • June-August (winter) can be cold and wet, but Tongariro has ski season and accommodation is cheapest

    Tips & Warnings

  • Sun protection -- New Zealand's UV levels are extreme due to the thin ozone layer. Sunburn can occur in under 15 minutes, even on cloudy days
  • Tongariro Alpine Crossing -- book the shuttle in advance during summer; it sells out. Check weather conditions with DOC (Department of Conservation) the morning of your hike. Do not attempt in poor visibility or winter conditions without alpine experience and gear
  • Freedom camping fines -- New Zealand has cracked down on freedom camping. Only camp at designated sites, and only in certified self-contained vehicles. Fines start at $200 NZD
  • Sandflies -- vicious on the Coromandel and west coast. Bring strong insect repellent with DEET
  • Grocery shopping -- Pak'nSave is the cheapest supermarket chain in NZ; Countdown and New World are more expensive
  • Petrol prices -- fuel is expensive in NZ ($2.50-3.00 NZD per litre). Factor this into your driving budget
  • Emergency: Dial 111
