East Coast: Sydney to Cairns

Route Overview

The Sydney-to-Cairns corridor is the single most-travelled backpacker route in Australia. Roughly 2,500 km of coastline running north through New South Wales and Queensland, it connects world-class beaches, rainforests, reef diving, and a continuous chain of party hostels. Almost every working-holiday backpacker in Australia does some version of this trip.

Suggested duration: 4-8 weeks (can be rushed in 2 weeks or stretched over months)

Best Direction

South to north (Sydney → Cairns) is the classic direction. The weather warms as you head north, you finish at the Great Barrier Reef as a grand finale, and most bus passes are designed for this direction. Many backpackers fly into Sydney on an international flight, travel north, then fly home or onward from Cairns.

Best Time of Year

  • April-October is ideal for the northern Queensland section (dry season, less stinger jellyfish risk, better reef visibility)
  • October-March is best for the southern section (warm beach weather in Sydney and Byron Bay)
  • May-August is a good compromise for the full route

    Tips & Warnings

  • Book bus passes early -- Premier passes sell out during peak season (November-February)
  • Relocation deals -- Check Transfercar, Imoova, and campervan company websites for one-way relocation deals that can be incredibly cheap
  • Stinger season -- Box jellyfish are present in tropical Queensland waters from October to May. Wear a stinger suit or swim in netted areas north of Rockhampton
  • Regional work -- If you need 88 days of farm work for a second-year WHV, plan stops around agricultural areas (Bundaberg, Bowen, Innisfail) during harvest season
  • Overnight buses -- Both Greyhound and Premier run overnight services on longer legs. Saves a night of accommodation but you arrive exhausted
  • Booking platform -- Use 12Go Asia or the operator websites directly; avoid dodgy hostel booking desks that mark up tickets
  • Wi-Fi on buses -- Greyhound offers USB charging; neither service has reliable Wi-Fi
  • Luggage -- Both operators allow one checked bag (20 kg) and one carry-on
